Mobility & Injury Prevention

The mobility demands involved in a sport like CrossFit are intense! We need good range of motion in the hips, shoulders, wrists and ankles… not to mention the ability to stabilize under load, repetition and fatigue.

Our programs take a multi-pronged approach to mobility for CrossFitters:

  • Ensuring access to the passive ROM needed to perform movements safely
  • Fine-tuning the muscular support necessary to productively load these joint positions
  • A combination of techniques for a 360 approach: myofascial release, passive and active mobility
  • Training good function, co-contraction, and killer tissue resilience near end range, where we tend to be most vulnerable and injury-prone
  • Slow, controlled mobility work to fully recruit the deep stabilizing muscles- the foundational precursor to effective and safe loading!
  • Doing all the above preemptively… Because it’s easier to prevent an injury in the first place than to heal an existing one!

Soft Tissue Recovery

Most of us understand the importance of good tissue recovery: gentle stretching, light active mobilization, and myofascial release are all excellent tools for this. Where we often fall short is actually taking the time to do this work, or knowing the most effective techniques to get the best outcome!

Our programming takes a multi-faceted approach to recovery:

  • Lots of myofascial release! Aside from being super relaxing, the right techniques can help improve and maintain range of motion, boost tissue hydration (crucial for effective recovery), and promote good tissue organization and resilience
  • Slow, controlled movement to promote circulation post-workout, gently take tissues through their range of motion, and engage the deep stabilizers (this doubles as effective injury prevention, too!)
  • Opportunities to move and feel your body in a non-competitive environment, and a manner that’s relaxing- more on the importance of this below!

Nervous System Recovery

Your nervous system also needs targeted recovery! If you’ve ever gone through a phase of feeling “off” in your training for no obvious reason, inadequate nervous system recovery could be a factor.

A chronically stressed, under-recovered nervous system can show up in a number of different ways:

  • Feeling sluggish, heavy and ineffective in your movements
  • Stalled athletic progress
  • Lack of mental focus, not being excited to work out
  • Being unusually uncoordinated or clumsy
  • Prolonged soreness, or being sore for no good reason
  • Disrupted sleep: tired during the day; exhausted but wired at night; difficulty falling and staying asleep
  • Life stressors and grinding away at work are leaving you depleted and wiped out

For optimal function and recovery, your nervous system needs the ability to seamlessly switch between sympathetic activation (you're amped up and ready for action!) and the parasympathetic state (calm, relaxed, and easily able to drift off to sleep come bedtime). Since athletic training is by nature a sympathetic-dominant activity, it’s crucial to be able to downshift into the parasympathetic state that facilitates good quality rest and recovery.

All Kaari programs incorporate accessible nervous system recovery techniques so that you can rest effectively and crush your next workout. Get ready to relax with some chill myofascial release, guided relaxation, accessible breath work and nervous system down-regulation, all designed for athletes, by athletes.

A Little Bit About Myofascial Release...

MFR has a myriad of well-researched benefits, including improved tissue hydration, better muscle recovery, and boosted proprioception. On top of that, most people also find it to be extremely enjoyable and relaxing, meaning it can provide a serious boost for your nervous system recovery as well!

While there's no harm in rolling out your lats with a well-worn foam roller, it also pays to take a more fine-tuned approach and get to grips with your personal tension spots. In the process, you'll develop your own personal arsenal of self-care, recovery and mobility techniques to help you support your long-term athletic development.

Need some MFR tools to get you underway? We got you: we love Rad Roller, and especially recommend their Recovery Rounds. These MFR balls have a perfect textured surface to help them stay in place, and a little bit of give to them to make the whole experience more pleasant- quite different from grinding away with a lacrosse ball!

We also recommend having a pair of yoga blocks and a blanket for this style of programming. A yoga mat is optional, but can help you get more comfortable!
